SHOTOVER RIVER RAFTING
White-water rafting on the fast-moving Shotover River
Exhilarating Grade 3-5 white-water rapids
One of the world's former richest gold-bearing rivers
A drive along the breathtaking Skippers Canyon Road
Highly-trained & knowledgeable rafting guides
Optional upgrade to include a helicopter ride
For adventure seekers, relish a heart-stopping drive along a narrow-twisting road hugging the sides of Skippers Canyon. Then white-water raft down rapids that pass through the spectacular scenery of the Shotover River on this half-day rafting trip.
Departing from beautiful Queenstown, your first stop is Cavells Rafting Base, where you're fitted with your wetsuit and safety gear.
The launch site can only be reached via the Skippers Canyon Road and its narrow surface, tight corners and sheer drops make for a memorable 40-minute guided bus tour.
Before beginning the 9 mile (14 km) river journey down the Shotover, formerly one of the world’s richest gold-bearing rivers, expert guides deliver a safety briefing and then launch your raft into the gentle waters of Deep Creek. You quickly hit the lower canyon where the Grade 3-5 rapids have names like Pinball and After Shock.
Experience the eerie darkness of the 170-metre (560-foot) Oxenbridge Tunnel, built by the Oxenbridge brothers in a failed attempt to divert water to recover gold from the riverbed.
The final thrill is delivered at Cascade Rapid before reaching the rafting base, where you're treated to a hot shower and sauna.
Optional upgrade to include a helicopter ride $330
Fly over the Wakatipu Basin and Skippers Road - carved into the side of a canyon, it's famous for hairpin bends and sheer drops—before taking you past the Coronet Peak Ski area and along the Shotover River, with Grade 3-5 rapids.
